Music Philosophy:
Learning and performing music is very
similar to language and communication.
Think of the NOTES as letters of the ALPHABET.
DYNAMICS, ACCENTS and STICKING as your PHONICS.
RHYTHM VARIATIONS as your VOCABULARY.
PLAYING A MUSICAL PHRASE as your SENTENCE STRUCTURE.
COMBINING TWO PHRASES as your PARAGRAPH.
PLAYING THE WHOLE SONG as an ESSAY.
Some read sheet music like reciting a written speech, while
others Improv a free association of random thoughts. There is
no wrong approach as long as what you play complements the music.
As a young musician, don't be afraid to imitate your influences.
A toddler learns to use words they hear from everyone around them.
Eventually, they form their own opinions and develop a unique
personality. Just as you will discover your own voice in
time.
Styles of music and versatility on your instrument are like
subjects studied in your elementary through high school education.
The more you explore new subjects, the more versatile you will
become. Once you get to the point when you think you have developed
a solid foundation within your playing, it may be time to specialize
in one given area but variety is certainly the spice of life.
If you can play most every style and play it well you will be
surprised how many more calls you will get.
